Neftaly: Strengthening HIV Prevention, and Reducing Tuberculosis and COVID-19 Impact

At Neftaly (South African Youth Project), we are dedicated to advancing public health through inclusive, community-driven interventions. Recognising the interconnected burden of HIV, Tuberculosis (TB), and COVID-19, our work focuses on prevention, education, early detection, treatment support, and resilience building within vulnerable and underserved communities.

We address these diseases not in isolation, but through integrated approaches that strengthen health systems, reduce stigma, and empower individuals to protect their health and that of others.

    Program Objectives

    • Prevent new HIV infections through youth-focused education, awareness campaigns, and access to prevention tools.
    • Reduce TB morbidity and mortality by promoting early detection, treatment adherence, and stigma reduction.
    • Mitigate the impact of COVID-19, particularly in resource-limited communities, through education, vaccination promotion, and behavioral change communication.
    • Promote health equity by reaching rural, peri-urban, and high-risk populations with essential services.

    Core Areas of Intervention

    1. HIV Prevention and Support

    • Life-skills-based sexual and reproductive health education.
    • HIV Testing Services (HTS) and linkage to care and treatment.
    • Awareness campaigns promoting PrEP, condom use, and risk reduction.

Neftaly Strengthening HMIS, Laboratory System and Procurement & Supply Chain Management Systems

Neftaly: Strengthening HMIS, Laboratory Systems, and Procurement & Supply Chain Management

At Neftaly (South African Youth Project), we are committed to strengthening the backbone of public health delivery by improving key health system components — Health Management Information Systems (HMIS), Laboratory Systems, and Procurement & Supply Chain Management (PSCM). These systems are critical for efficient service delivery, effective disease control, and long-term health system resilience.

Our approach focuses on capacity building, digital transformation, quality assurance, and accountability, ensuring that communities receive timely, accurate, and quality health services.

    1. Health Management Information Systems (HMIS)

A robust HMIS ensures that health data is timely, accurate, and actionable. Neftaly works to strengthen data systems for improved decision-making and health service delivery.

    Key Focus Areas:

    • Training healthcare workers in data collection, entry, validation, and analysis.
    • Supporting the rollout of electronic medical records (EMRs) and reporting platforms.
    • Promoting data use through dashboards, regular reviews, and feedback loops.
    • Enhancing interoperability between facility-based and community health data systems.

    2. Laboratory Systems

High-quality laboratory services are essential for accurate diagnosis, disease surveillance, and patient care. Neftaly supports the enhancement of laboratory capacity and quality at all levels.

    Key Focus Areas:

    • Infrastructure support and supply of essential equipment and reagents.
    • Strengthening quality control measures and lab accreditation readiness.
    • Training lab personnel on standard operating procedures and diagnostic protocols.
    • Enhancing sample referral systems and result turnaround time, especially for HIV, TB, and COVID-19.

    3. Procurement & Supply Chain Management Systems

A reliable supply chain ensures that critical medical products — from ARVs to lab reagents — are always available where and when needed. Neftaly improves procurement planning, logistics, and inventory management.

    Key Focus Areas:

    • Capacity building in forecasting, quantification, and stock management.
    • Deployment of digital tools for inventory tracking and reporting.
    • Support for last-mile delivery systems and emergency response logistics.
    • Ensuring transparency and compliance with national procurement guidelines.

    Our Impact

    • Trained over 300 frontline workers across HMIS, laboratory, and supply chain systems.
    • Supported digital transformation of data systems in 30+ public health facilities.
    • Improved availability and turnaround time for essential diagnostics and medicines.
    • Reduced stock-outs and improved reporting accuracy across supported sites.

    Building Resilient Health Systems

Neftaly’s work strengthens the pillars of a functional health system, enabling faster responses to epidemics, better patient outcomes, and greater accountability. By investing in systems today, we are building a stronger, healthier tomorrow.

  • Neftaly Strengthening human and institutional capacity of the health system to manage TB and MDR-TB services

Neftaly Strengthening human and institutional capacity of the health system to manage TB and MDR-TB services

Neftaly: Strengthening Human and Institutional Capacity to Manage TB and MDR-TB Services

At Neftaly (South African Youth Project), we are committed to strengthening the health system’s ability to effectively manage Tuberculosis (TB) and Multidrug-Resistant Tuberculosis (MDR-TB). As South Africa remains among the highest TB burden countries globally, particularly with rising MDR-TB cases, the need for a resilient, skilled, and well-coordinated health response is more urgent than ever.

Our approach focuses on building the skills of healthcare workers, strengthening institutional systems, and ensuring that TB and MDR-TB services are accessible, high-quality, and patient-centred.

    Program Objectives

    • Enhance the capacity of healthcare workers to diagnose, treat, and manage TB and MDR-TB effectively.
    • Strengthen institutional systems for improved planning, coordination, monitoring, and evaluation of TB services.
    • Improve treatment adherence and outcomes through community-based support and integration of services.
    • Ensure early detection, infection control, and proper case management in both facility and community settings.

    Key Intervention Areas

    1. Human Resource Capacity Building

    • Training and mentoring of nurses, doctors, community health workers, and lab staff on TB/MDR-TB clinical management protocols.
    • Capacity development in infection prevention and control (IPC), especially in high-burden settings.
    • Supporting task-shifting strategies to empower mid-level cadres and improve service coverage.

    2. Institutional Strengthening

    • Enhancing facility-level data collection, reporting, and use for evidence-based decision-making.
    • Strengthening referral systems and patient tracking across different levels of care.
    • Supporting the development of standard operating procedures (SOPs) for MDR-TB case management and patient follow-up.
    • Promoting integration of TB services with HIV, primary health care, and community outreach systems.

    3. Community Engagement and Support Systems

    • Mobilizing and training community health workers and peer supporters to provide treatment literacy and adherence support.
    • Establishing community-based DOT (Directly Observed Treatment) and psychosocial support mechanisms.
    • Reducing stigma and discrimination through education and community dialogue.

    4. Strengthening Diagnostics and Surveillance

    • Supporting rapid diagnostic tools (e.g., GeneXpert) and specimen transport systems.
    • Building capacity for drug resistance surveillance, data management, and timely reporting.
    • Enhancing linkages between laboratory services and clinical care teams.

    Our Impact

    • Trained over 200 health professionals in TB and MDR-TB clinical management and infection control.
    • Supported facility-level MDR-TB case reviews and data audits in high-burden districts.
    • Improved community treatment support models, leading to higher adherence and reduced default rates.
    • Strengthened partnerships with district health offices to coordinate and monitor TB response plans.

    Why It Matters

MDR-TB poses a major public health threat, requiring a strong health workforce, integrated systems, and sustained community engagement. Without skilled personnel and responsive institutions, even the best treatments cannot reach those in need or achieve long-term outcomes.

Neftaly’s interventions bridge the gap between national TB strategies and on-the-ground realities, ensuring health systems are equipped to respond effectively and compassionately.

    Partner With Neftaly

We welcome collaboration with government, NGOs, donors, and technical partners to expand this work across South Africa and the region. Together, we can build a resilient health system capable of ending TB and MDR-TB for good.
