Neftaly: Strengthening Key Malaria Control Interventions
At Neftaly (South African Youth Project), we are committed to supporting South Africa’s national efforts to eliminate malaria through a comprehensive, community-driven, and evidence-based approach. Although South Africa has made significant progress, malaria remains a persistent threat in certain regions, particularly in border areas and vulnerable populations.
Neftaly strengthens key malaria control interventions to ensure that prevention, diagnosis, and treatment efforts are sustainable, equitable, and effective, especially in underserved communities.
Program Objectives
- Reduce malaria transmission and prevent new infections through targeted interventions.
- Strengthen early detection, diagnosis, and case management at the community and facility levels.
- Promote community engagement and behavior change to increase uptake of malaria services.
- Support surveillance systems for real-time monitoring, outbreak response, and elimination tracking.
Key Malaria Control Interventions
1. Vector Control
- Support for Indoor Residual Spraying (IRS) in high-risk areas to kill and repel malaria-carrying mosquitoes.
- Promotion and distribution of Insecticide-Treated Nets (ITNs), especially for pregnant women and children.
- Community education on environmental management to reduce mosquito breeding sites (e.g., stagnant water).
2. Early Diagnosis and Treatment
- Training community health workers and clinic staff to provide rapid diagnostic testing (RDT).
- Ensuring consistent availability of effective antimalarial medicines in public health facilities.
- Promoting prompt treatment-seeking behavior through community outreach and awareness.
3. Surveillance and Case Reporting
- Strengthening malaria case notification systems to ensure timely reporting and investigation.
- Supporting the use of mobile tools and electronic data systems for real-time surveillance and response.
- Facilitating cross-border collaboration for coordinated control in border districts.
4. Health Education and Community Engagement
- Conducting community dialogues, school campaigns, and peer-led outreach to promote malaria prevention.
- Addressing myths and misinformation about malaria through culturally appropriate messaging.
- Empowering communities to take ownership of local malaria control efforts.
5. Capacity Building and Systems Strengthening
- Training healthcare providers in malaria case management, referral systems, and drug resistance monitoring.
- Supporting local health authorities with planning, monitoring, and evaluation tools.
- Enhancing integration of malaria services with maternal and child health, HIV, and primary healthcare platforms.
Our Impact
- Reached over 20,000 community members with malaria prevention and education messages.
- Trained 100+ frontline health workers in malaria diagnosis, treatment, and case reporting.
- Supported IRS and ITN distribution campaigns in cross-border and endemic districts.
- Improved early diagnosis and treatment rates in Neftaly-supported communities.
