Neftaly Perinatal Infection Screening
Overview
Perinatal infection screening is a critical component of maternal and neonatal healthcare. Early identification and management of infections during pregnancy and the perinatal period can significantly reduce risks to both mother and baby, improving outcomes and preventing complications.
Purpose
The goal of Neftaly Perinatal Infection Screening is to detect infections that may affect the pregnancy, labor, delivery, or neonatal period. Timely screening allows for appropriate interventions, reducing the risk of transmission to the fetus or newborn and preventing adverse outcomes such as preterm labor, low birth weight, congenital infections, or neonatal sepsis.
Target Population
- All pregnant women attending antenatal care
- High-risk pregnancies, including women with prior history of infections or complications
- Neonates born to mothers with known or suspected infections
Key Infections Screened
- Group B Streptococcus (GBS)
- Screened at 35–37 weeks gestation via vaginal-rectal swab
- Positive cases receive intrapartum antibiotic prophylaxis to prevent neonatal GBS disease
- Syphilis
- Screened early in pregnancy using serologic tests (e.g., RPR, VDRL)
- Positive cases require prompt treatment with penicillin to prevent congenital syphilis
- HIV
- Routine screening offered to all pregnant women early in pregnancy
- Early diagnosis allows for antiretroviral therapy to reduce vertical transmission risk
- Hepatitis B Virus (HBV)
- Screening during the first antenatal visit
- Infants born to HBV-positive mothers receive immunoglobulin and vaccination at birth
- Chlamydia and Gonorrhea
- Screening recommended in high-risk populations or symptomatic women
- Untreated infections can lead to premature rupture of membranes and neonatal infections
- Rubella Immunity
- Screening to assess immunity status to prevent congenital rubella syndrome
- Vaccination recommended postpartum if non-immune
- Toxoplasmosis and Cytomegalovirus (CMV)
- Screening selectively done based on risk factors or clinical suspicion
- Counseling on prevention measures is important
Screening Procedures
- Conducted as part of routine antenatal visits
- Blood tests, swabs, and urine tests as appropriate
- Follow-up and treatment plans provided based on results
Importance of Screening
- Prevents maternal complications such as chorioamnionitis, sepsis, and preterm labor
- Protects neonates from severe infections and long-term disabilities
- Supports public health goals in reducing perinatal morbidity and mortality
Neftaly Commitment
Neftaly is committed to supporting healthcare providers with up-to-date protocols, education materials, and resources for effective perinatal infection screening and management, ensuring safer pregnancies and healthier newborns.
