Neftaly: Strengthening Malaria Control in Mali
Malaria remains a significant public health challenge in Mali, particularly impacting children under five, pregnant women, and rural populations. At Neftaly (South African Youth Project), we are dedicated to supporting Mali’s national malaria control program by enhancing prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and surveillance efforts through community-centered and evidence-based interventions.
Our mission is to reduce malaria transmission and morbidity, contributing to Mali’s goal of sustainable malaria control and eventual elimination.
Program Objectives
- Reduce malaria incidence and mortality through strengthened prevention and case management.
- Enhance community awareness and uptake of malaria control measures.
- Build capacity within health systems to deliver quality, timely malaria services.
- Improve malaria surveillance and data-driven decision-making for effective response.
Key Intervention Areas
1. Vector Control
- Support and scale-up of Indoor Residual Spraying (IRS) campaigns in high-transmission areas.
- Distribution and promotion of Insecticide-Treated Nets (ITNs), with special focus on vulnerable groups.
- Promote environmental management strategies to eliminate mosquito breeding sites.
2. Diagnosis and Treatment
- Train healthcare workers on rapid diagnostic testing (RDT) and adherence to national malaria treatment protocols.
- Ensure continuous availability of effective antimalarial medications in health facilities.
- Encourage early treatment-seeking behavior through targeted community outreach.
3. Surveillance and Monitoring

5. Health System Strengthening
- Provide ongoing training and mentorship for health workers on malaria service delivery.
- Support efficient supply chain management to prevent stockouts of essential malaria commodities.
- Foster collaboration between national malaria programs, regional health authorities, and community health workers.
Our Impact So Far
- Reached over 18,000 community members with malaria education and prevention messaging.
- Trained more than 90 healthcare providers in malaria diagnosis and treatment protocols.
- Supported the distribution of 25,000+ insecticide-treated nets in vulnerable communities.
- Enhanced the timeliness and quality of malaria case reporting across supported districts.
Why This Matters
Malaria continues to pose a major health and economic burden in Mali. Strengthening malaria control efforts protects vulnerable populations, reduces strain on health systems, and moves Mali closer to malaria elimination.
