Neftaly: Strengthening Malaria Control in Benin

Malaria remains a major public health challenge in Benin, particularly affecting vulnerable groups such as children under five, pregnant women, and rural communities. At Neftaly (South African Youth Project), we are dedicated to supporting Benin’s national malaria control efforts through targeted, evidence-based, and community-centered interventions.

Our approach strengthens prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and surveillance systems to reduce malaria transmission and morbidity, contributing to Benin’s goal of malaria elimination.

Program Objectives

  • Reduce malaria incidence and mortality through effective prevention and case management.
  • Strengthen community engagement to improve uptake of malaria control interventions.
  • Enhance the capacity of health systems to deliver quality malaria services.
  • Support malaria surveillance and data-driven decision-making for rapid response.

Key Intervention Areas

1. Vector Control

  • Support Indoor Residual Spraying (IRS) campaigns in high-transmission zones.
  • Distribute and promote consistent use of Insecticide-Treated Nets (ITNs), prioritizing pregnant women and children.
  • Encourage environmental management to reduce mosquito breeding sites in communities.

2. Diagnosis and Treatment

  • Strengthen capacity of healthcare workers in rapid diagnostic testing (RDT) and appropriate case management.
  • Ensure consistent availability of quality-assured antimalarial drugs at all health service points.
  • Promote timely treatment-seeking behavior through awareness campaigns.

3. Surveillance and Monitoring

  • Support strengthening of malaria case reporting and surveillance systems at community and facility levels.
  • Facilitate use of digital tools for real-time data collection and outbreak detection.
  • Engage in cross-sectoral collaboration to improve data use for targeted interventions.

4. Community Mobilization and Behavior Change

  • Conduct community education sessions focusing on malaria prevention, symptoms, and treatment adherence.
  • Collaborate with local leaders and schools to promote malaria awareness and preventive practices.
  • Address myths and misconceptions around malaria through culturally sensitive messaging.

5. Health System Strengthening

  • Train and mentor health workers on malaria guidelines and protocols.
  • Support supply chain management to prevent stockouts of malaria commodities.
  • Enhance coordination between national programs, local health authorities, and community health workers.

Our Impact So Far

  • Reached over 15,000 community members with malaria prevention and education messages.
  • Trained 80+ health workers in malaria diagnosis and case management.
  • Supported distribution of 20,000+ insecticide-treated nets in target communities.
  • Improved malaria case reporting timeliness and accuracy in supported districts.

Why This Work Matters

Malaria continues to undermine health and economic development in Benin. By strengthening malaria control interventions, Neftaly helps protect the most vulnerable, reduce healthcare burdens, and advance the country toward malaria elimination goals.
