It helps assess:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Rectal wall, masses, or abnormalities<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Anal sphincter tone<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In men, the size, shape, consistency, and nodularity of the prostate<br><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rectal_examination?utm_source=chatgpt.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Wikipedia<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/lookformedical.com\/en\/search\/digital-rectal-examination?utm_source=chatgpt.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Look for Medical<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Diagnostic Uses<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. Prostate Assessment in Symptomatic Patients<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The DRE is used in patients presenting with urinary symptoms (e.g., frequency, urgency, hesitancy, nocturia) to check for abnormalities suggestive of prostate cancer.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>According to a systematic review of primary care use:<ul><li><strong>Sensitivity<\/strong>: ~28.6% (i.e., DRE misses many cancers)<\/li><li><strong>Specificity<\/strong>: ~90.7% (i.e., positive findings are likely meaningful)<\/li><li><strong>Positive Predictive Value (PPV)<\/strong>: ~42.3%<\/li><li><strong>Negative Predictive Value (NPV)<\/strong>: ~84.2%<br><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC5985061\/?utm_source=chatgpt.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">PMC<\/a><\/li><\/ul>In other words:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A <strong>positive DRE<\/strong> is a strong indicator warranting urgent referral (per UK NICE guidelines).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A <strong>negative DRE<\/strong>, however, still leaves a significant risk (~16%) of underlying malignancy\u2014above the referral threshold.<br>Therefore, decisions to refer should be based on symptoms, not DRE alone.<br><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC5985061\/?utm_source=chatgpt.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">PMC<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2.
