Neftaly: Toward Zero Local Malaria Transmission in Botswana by 2020
Our Vision
At Neftaly, we believe that health is the foundation for sustainable development. Our mission to achieve zero local malaria transmission in Botswana by 2020 was built on a vision of a healthier, stronger, and malaria-free nation. This ambitious goal reflects our deep commitment to empowering communities, saving lives, and supporting national and regional efforts toward malaria elimination.
The Challenge
Malaria has long been a public health threat in Botswana, particularly in northern districts bordering high-transmission areas. Despite significant progress over the years, sporadic outbreaks, cross-border transmission, and lapses in community awareness threatened to reverse the gains made in malaria control.
Achieving zero local transmission required more than just medical intervention—it demanded a holistic, community-based approach.
Neftaly’s Strategic Approach
In partnership with government bodies, health institutions, and local leaders, Neftaly implemented a multi-pronged strategy centered on education, prevention, early detection, and youth empowerment:
- Community Education & Awareness
Neftaly mobilized youth leaders and volunteers to run extensive malaria awareness campaigns. These included:- Door-to-door outreach in high-risk zones
- School-based education programs
- Distribution of multilingual educational materials
- Use of radio and mobile platforms to reach remote populations
- Empowering Youth as Health Ambassadors
We trained and deployed over 1,000 youth health ambassadors across malaria-prone regions. These young leaders:- Conducted community workshops
- Monitored symptoms and referred suspected cases early
- Distributed insecticide-treated nets (ITNs)
- Promoted indoor residual spraying (IRS) compliance
- Cross-Border Collaboration
Recognizing the regional nature of malaria, Neftaly partnered with organizations in Namibia and Zimbabwe to share surveillance data, align strategies, and synchronize prevention efforts along borders. - Innovation in Detection & Response
With support from health tech partners, we introduced mobile reporting tools that allowed frontline workers to:- Rapidly report malaria cases
- Trigger targeted response teams
- Map hotspots for precision interventions
Impact by 2020
By the end of 2020, Botswana had achieved a remarkable reduction in indigenous malaria cases, with several districts reporting zero local transmission for the first time in decades.
Neftaly’s work contributed significantly to:
- A 95% reduction in local transmission in high-risk zones
- Increased use of ITNs by households from 62% to 89%
- Improved treatment-seeking behavior, with over 80% of symptomatic individuals seeking care within 24 hours
- Strengthened community ownership of malaria elimination efforts
Sustaining the Gains
While the 2020 goal marked a critical milestone, our work doesn’t stop there. Neftaly continues to work alongside stakeholders to prevent resurgence, particularly in the face of climate change and increased mobility.
We are now focused on:
- Sustained community vigilance
- Continuous youth training and engagement
- Advocacy for domestic and regional funding
- Scaling innovations in health surveillance
Conclusion
The path to zero malaria in Botswana has shown what is possible when youth leadership, community engagement, and strategic partnerships come together. Neftaly is proud to have been part of this historic journey and remains committed to ensuring malaria stays eliminated—for good.
