What Is Female Genital Mutilation (FGM)?
Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) refers to all procedures involving partial or total removal of the external female genitalia or other injury to the female genital organs for non-medical reasons. FGM is internationally recognized as a violation of the human rights of girls and women.
FGM has no health benefits and causes lifelong physical and psychological harm. It is often performed under unsafe conditions and is usually carried out on girls between infancy and age 15.

- Over 200 million girls and women worldwide have undergone FGM.
- FGM is practiced in over 30 countries, including parts of Africa, the Middle East, and Asia.
- It is also found in migrant communities across Europe, North America, and elsewhere.
- FGM is often linked to cultural, religious, or social norms, but it is not required by any religion.
Raising awareness is the first step toward protecting girls at risk, supporting survivors, and ending the practice for future generations.

- Type I – Partial or total removal of the clitoris (clitoridectomy)
- Type II – Removal of the clitoris and labia minora (excision)
- Type III – Narrowing of the vaginal opening (infibulation)
- Type IV – All other harmful procedures (e.g., pricking, piercing, cauterizing)
⚠️ Health Risks of FGM
Immediate Complications:
- Severe pain
- Excessive bleeding (hemorrhage)
- Infections, including tetanus and sepsis
- Shock or even death
Long-Term Consequences:
- Chronic pelvic pain
- Urinary and menstrual problems
- Pain during intercourse
- Increased risk during childbirth
- Psychological trauma: anxiety, PTSD, depression
- Reduced sexual and reproductive health
