What Is Sepsis?
Sepsis is the body’s extreme response to an infection. It occurs when an infection triggers a chain reaction throughout the body, leading to tissue damage, organ failure, and possibly death if not treated quickly.
Anyone can get sepsis, but it is most dangerous for:
- Infants and young children
- Elderly individuals
- People with chronic illnesses or weakened immune systems
- Patients recovering from surgery or with open wounds

Know the Signs of Sepsis
Early recognition saves lives. If you or someone you know has an infection and shows any of the following symptoms, seek emergency care immediately:
- Slurred speech or confusion
- Extreme shivering, fever, or feeling very cold
- Passing no urine (in a day)
- Severe breathlessness
- It feels like you’re going to die
- Skin mottled, pale, or discolored
