Neftaly: Local Leadership and Safety Advocacy

    Introduction

Effective safety solutions in informal settlements require more than technology—they demand strong, committed local leadership and community advocacy. Neftaly recognizes that the most sustainable change comes when residents and local leaders take ownership of safety challenges and work collectively toward solutions.

Through its digital tools and community engagement, Neftaly empowers local leaders to become champions of safety, resilience, and well-being in their neighborhoods.

The Role of Local Leadership in Safety

Local leaders—including community elders, youth representatives, women’s groups, and grassroots organizations—play a critical role by:

    • Identifying and voicing safety concerns
    • Mobilizing residents to participate in hazard reporting and mitigation
    • Bridging communication between communities and municipal authorities
    • Advocating for resources, policy changes, and improved service delivery

Neftaly’s platform supports these leaders by providing data, visibility, and communication channels that amplify their impact.

Neftaly’s Approach to Supporting Local Leadership

    ???? Accessible Reporting Tools

Neftaly’s user-friendly mobile app allows leaders and community members to report hazards quickly and accurately, ensuring leaders stay informed and responsive.

    ???? Capacity Building

We provide training and support to develop local leadership skills in digital tools, safety monitoring, and advocacy strategies—strengthening their ability to lead sustained change.

    Advocacy for Inclusive Safety

Neftaly champions inclusive advocacy that ensures all voices are heard, especially marginalized groups such as women, youth, and people with disabilities. By promoting participatory safety monitoring, local leadership becomes more representative and equitable.

    • Campaigned for the installation of street lighting in crime-prone areas
    • Coordinated clean-up drives to eliminate waste hazards
    • Partnered with local authorities to repair dangerous infrastructure
    • Raised awareness about fire safety and emergency preparedness

These efforts have led to measurable improvements in community safety and strengthened trust between residents and officials.

Neftaly: Strengthening Local Leadership for Promoting Safety in Informal Settlements

    Introduction

Local leadership is the cornerstone of building safe, resilient informal settlements. These leaders understand the unique challenges their communities face and are best positioned to inspire collective action and drive meaningful change.

Neftaly is dedicated to strengthening local leadership by providing tools, training, and support that empower community leaders to effectively promote safety and advocate for sustainable solutions.

    Why Strengthen Local Leadership?

Informal settlements often experience gaps in formal governance and service delivery. Strong local leaders fill these gaps by:

    • Organizing residents around safety priorities
    • Facilitating communication between communities and authorities
    • Mobilizing resources and partnerships
    • Leading advocacy efforts for infrastructure improvements and policy change

However, many local leaders lack access to data, technology, and capacity-building resources that enhance their effectiveness. Neftaly bridges this gap.

Neftaly’s Strategy to Empower Local Leaders

???? Digital Tools for Community Engagement

Neftaly provides easy-to-use mobile apps and mapping platforms that allow leaders to collect, visualize, and share safety data—giving them the evidence needed to highlight critical hazards and track progress.

    ???? Training and Capacity Building

We offer workshops and ongoing training focused on:

    • Hazard identification and reporting
    • Use of digital tools and data interpretation
    • Community mobilization and advocacy skills
    • Collaboration with local authorities and service providers

    ???? Facilitating Multi-Stakeholder Partnerships

Neftaly connects local leaders with NGOs, government agencies, and donors to foster partnerships that bring resources and technical support to community-driven safety initiatives.

    ???? Data-Driven Advocacy

By harnessing real-time data, local leaders can make compelling cases for urgent interventions, improved services, and policy reforms—amplifying their influence and impact.

    Outcomes of Strengthened Leadership

    • Increased community participation in safety monitoring and hazard reporting
    • Faster identification and resolution of safety risks
    • Enhanced trust and collaboration between residents and authorities
    • Sustainable safety improvements driven from within the community

    Success in Action

In pilot communities, Neftaly-trained leaders have successfully advocated for:

    • Installation of safer street lighting
    • Improvement of drainage systems to prevent flooding
    • Fire safety education campaigns
    • Establishment of local safety committees

These initiatives have led to measurable reductions in accidents and increased community confidence in their ability to influence change.

    Conclusion

Neftaly believes that when local leaders are empowered with the right tools and knowledge, they become catalysts for safer, healthier, and more resilient informal settlements.

Together, we can strengthen leadership to unlock the full potential of communities to protect themselves and build a brighter future.

Neftaly: Empowering Youth Through Safety Education and Leadership in Informal Settlements

    Introduction

In Africa’s informal settlements, young people represent both the largest demographic group and the greatest untapped force for positive change. Yet, they are often the most affected by safety challenges — from fire risks and poor infrastructure to violence and health hazards.

Neftaly believes in the transformative power of youth. Through our Youth Safety Education and Leadership Initiative, we are equipping young people in informal settlements with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to lead community-driven solutions that make their neighborhoods safer, more resilient, and more hopeful.

    The Challenge

Youth in informal settlements face a range of safety-related issues:

    • Unsafe Housing prone to fires, floods, or structural collapse
    • Lack of Access to Emergency Services and first aid knowledge
    • Gender-Based Violence and limited safe spaces
    • Crime and Substance Abuse, especially among vulnerable youth
    • Lack of Representation in planning, decision-making, or safety initiatives

Despite these challenges, youth often lead informal support networks, respond first in emergencies, and influence their peers. Neftaly is harnessing this leadership potential.

    Our Approach: Educate. Equip. Empower.

    1. Safety Education & Training

Neftaly runs hands-on workshops and mobile learning programs that cover:

    • Fire safety and first response
    • Basic disaster preparedness and evacuation
    • Personal safety and mental health awareness
    • Gender-based violence prevention
    • Environmental safety and sanitation

All training is community-based, interactive, and tailored to local contexts.

    2. Youth Leadership Development

We identify and mentor local youth leaders through:

    • Leadership boot camps and safety ambassador programs
    • Community project design and management training
    • Public speaking, advocacy, and policy engagement
    • Peer education skills and digital storytelling

Youth participants are encouraged to lead their own safety campaigns and serve as role models in their neighborhoods.

    3. Youth-Led Safety Projects

Neftaly provides mini-grants and technical support for youth-led initiatives such as:

    • Installing community fire extinguishers or water points
    • Creating “Safe Zones” or peer support groups
    • Hosting safety awareness days and local radio programs
    • Developing mobile apps for reporting unsafe conditions

These projects give youth a voice and a stake in shaping their future.

    Impact Goals (2025–2027)

    • Train 10,000+ youth in safety awareness and emergency response
    • Support 500 youth-led safety initiatives across 10 urban settlements
    • Develop a regional Youth Safety Leadership Network
    • Integrate youth safety champions into municipal urban planning efforts
    • Reduce safety-related incidents involving youth by 30% in target areas

Success Story: Asha’s Voice in Mathare, Kenya

At just 19, Asha became a Neftaly-trained safety ambassador. After witnessing a fire in her settlement, she mobilized her peers to install locally-made fire extinguishers and start a first aid training group. Today, her initiative reaches over 300 households, and she’s advocating for youth representation in Nairobi’s urban safety plans.

    Why This Matters

Empowering youth isn’t charity — it’s smart urban development. Young people:

    • Understand their communities
    • Are digitally connected and creative
    • Inspire change through peer influence
    • Will shape the cities of tomorrow

With the right support, they can become the frontline defenders of safety and dignity in even the most challenging environments.
