Neftaly: Safety and the Role of Family and Gender Dynamics in Informal Settlements
Introduction
In informal settlements across Africa, safety is deeply shaped by family structures and gender dynamics. While homes and families serve as the first line of protection, they can also reflect the very inequalities and risks that compromise safety — particularly for women, children, and marginalized genders.
At Neftaly, we recognize that building safer informal settlements requires more than upgrading infrastructure. It requires understanding how safety is experienced differently within the home — and addressing the gendered roles, norms, and power relations that influence who is safe, and who is at risk.
The Intersection of Safety, Family, and Gender
In informal settlements, families are often multi-generational, densely housed, and economically stressed. Within this context:
- Women and girls are often responsible for domestic tasks in unsafe conditions — using open flames, walking long distances for water, or navigating poorly lit areas
- Men and boys may face risks tied to violence, unemployment, or social pressure to provide or protect
- Children face threats from structural hazards, neglect, or unsafe play environments
- Gender-based violence (GBV) often occurs in or near the home, exacerbated by overcrowding, lack of privacy, and limited support services
Safety isn’t just about the community — it starts at home, and it is influenced by the dynamics within families.
Neftaly’s Approach to Gender-Responsive Safety
1. Household-Level Safety Education
Neftaly provides tailored training for families on:
- Safe cooking and electrical practices
- Fire and flood preparedness for all household members
- Conflict resolution and communication
- Identifying and responding to signs of GBV or child abuse
Workshops are designed to be inclusive, practical, and culturally sensitive, promoting shared responsibility among all genders.
2. Gender-Based Violence Prevention & Support
We work to address GBV through:
- Community awareness campaigns and safe reporting mechanisms
- Training faith leaders, traditional leaders, and community workers to recognize and respond to GBV
- Establishing safe spaces and support circles for survivors
- Collaborating with service providers for legal, medical, and psychosocial assistance
Neftaly ensures that safety includes freedom from harm within the home.
3. Engaging Men and Boys as Partners
We promote positive masculinity and gender equality through:
- Male mentorship programs and father-focused workshops
- Youth dialogues on respect, emotional wellbeing, and responsibility
- Challenging harmful norms around masculinity and control
- Encouraging shared caregiving and household roles
When men are part of the solution, entire families and communities become safer.
4. Women-Led Safety Solutions
We empower women to lead safety initiatives through:
- Training female safety ambassadors and neighborhood watch leaders
- Supporting women’s cooperatives to improve home safety (e.g. installing lights, fixing pathways)
- Promoting women’s voices in settlement upgrading and urban planning processes
When women lead, safety deepens.
Case Study: Family Safety Circles in Kibera, Kenya
Neftaly launched the Family Safety Circles initiative in 2024, where families in Kibera met weekly to discuss safety practices, gender roles, and conflict resolution. Facilitated by trained community members, the program led to:
- A 40% increase in joint decision-making within households
- Improved school attendance for girls due to safer routes and family support
- Reduced domestic tensions during emergencies like fires and flooding
Building Safer Families, Building Safer Settlements
Addressing safety in informal settlements isn’t only about roads, lights, or walls. It’s about relationships, roles, and respect. By supporting healthier family dynamics and gender equity, Neftaly creates safety from the inside out.
