Neftaly: Scaling Up TB Treatment Coverage from 64% in 2022 to 75% by 2026
Despite global progress in TB control, treatment coverage remains a major challenge, especially among vulnerable populations. In 2022, TB treatment coverage stood at just 64%, leaving a significant portion of those infected undiagnosed or untreated — increasing the risk of transmission and mortality.
Neftaly (South African Youth Project) is committed to supporting national efforts to scale up TB treatment coverage to at least 75% by 2026, through targeted interventions focused on access, quality, and equity.
Program Goal
To increase TB treatment coverage from 64% in 2022 to 75% by 2026, ensuring more people with TB are diagnosed early and successfully placed on treatment.
Strategic Objectives
- Expand access to TB diagnostic and treatment services, especially in underserved areas.
- Strengthen case finding and linkage to care among high-risk and vulnerable populations.
- Improve adherence support and community-based treatment models.
- Enhance monitoring, reporting, and accountability systems to track progress.
Key Intervention Areas
1. Active Case Finding and Screening
- Intensify TB screening efforts in high-burden and hard-to-reach communities.
- Integrate TB screening into HIV, maternal and child health, and non-communicable disease services.
2. Diagnostic and Treatment Access
- Expand availability of rapid diagnostic tools (e.g., GeneXpert).
- Ensure uninterrupted supply of TB medicines and reduce barriers to service access.
3. Community Engagement and Adherence Support
- Train community health workers and peer supporters to follow up with TB patients.
- Provide psychosocial and socio-economic support to improve treatment adherence.
4. Health System Strengthening
- Build capacity of healthcare workers on TB case management and infection control.
- Improve data systems for better patient tracking, monitoring, and reporting.
Expected Outcomes by 2026
- TB treatment coverage increased to at least 75% nationally.
- Improved case detection and reduced delays in diagnosis and treatment initiation.
- Enhanced patient adherence and treatment completion rates.
- Strengthened capacity of health systems to sustain long-term TB control.
Why It Matters
Every person left untreated is a missed opportunity to stop TB transmission. Expanding treatment coverage not only saves lives but also helps break the chain of infection. Neftaly’s work ensures that no one is left behind in the journey toward TB elimination.
